Kasoa, Dansoman, and Ashaiman: The Honest Truth About Accra's Most Overlooked Suburbs

Open almost any glossy "where to live in Accra" guide and you will not find Kasoa, Dansoman, or Ashaiman in it. That is not because nobody lives there — a huge share of greater Accra's working population lives in exactly these three areas. It is because these guides are written to sell an aspirational fantasy, and these neighborhoods were never built to be one. They were built to be affordable, functional, and close enough to work. For most people renting in Accra, that is a far more useful thing to be.

Kasoa: The Largest, the Cheapest, the Most Misunderstood

Kasoa sits west of Accra proper, technically in the Central Region, and it has grown faster than almost anywhere else in the greater metro area over the last decade. The reputation is almost entirely about the N1 highway traffic — and it is deserved; the commute into central Accra can run 60 to 90 minutes at peak times, sometimes worse. What the reputation leaves out is the actual housing stock: newer, larger, better-built apartment complexes than you will find at equivalent prices almost anywhere closer to town.

A 2-bedroom apartment in Kasoa runs GHS 1,200 to GHS 2,200. A 3-bedroom house in a gated estate reaches GHS 1,800 to GHS 3,000 — roughly a third of what equivalent square footage costs in East Legon. If your work allows a flexible schedule around the worst traffic hours, or is based on the western side of the city, the trade-off tilts heavily in Kasoa's favour.

Dansoman: The Established Middle, Closer Than People Assume

Dansoman is older and more centrally located than its reputation suggests — a long-established, largely middle-class residential area with decent road infrastructure and a settled community, not a fringe suburb. A self-contained chamber and hall runs GHS 1,000 to GHS 1,800; a 2-bedroom apartment GHS 2,000 to GHS 3,500. The area sits close enough to the coastal road that access to central Accra is considerably more manageable than Kasoa's.

Ashaiman: Industrial, Working-Class, Genuinely Undervalued for the Right Person

Ashaiman sits directly adjacent to Tema and is the most industrial and working-class of the three — and the cheapest. A self-contained room runs GHS 700 to GHS 1,400; a 2-bedroom house with its own compound GHS 1,600 to GHS 2,800. For anyone working in the Tema port, the industrial zone, or the surrounding manufacturing corridor, Ashaiman is not a compromise you settle for. It is the correct choice — cheaper, and closer to the job than renting in Accra proper and commuting out every day.

Who Each One Actually Suits

• Kasoa — best value-for-space in greater Accra, if your commute can absorb the N1 traffic or your work is on the western side of the city.
• Dansoman — an established, centrally-located middle ground for anyone who wants real infrastructure without premium-tier prices.
• Ashaiman — the practical, correct choice if your work is in Tema, the port, or the surrounding industrial zone, not a fallback.
